Overly Sensitive From Raw Food: Is it all in your head?
The toxicity phenomenon

       As I've researched raw foodist’s blogs and articles about people who live almost completely off of raw food, I’ve stumbled across an interesting phenomenon: many say that they become more sensitive to everyday toxins and chemicals and even cooked food that never used to bother them after they switch over to raw food.  This seems to contradict the idea that raw food makes a person stronger and healthier.

Raw food is healthy

       I felt better and stronger as I ate more and more raw food.  I felt very clear mentally, and very healthy physically. The same is true for others.  Many raw foodists have amazing fitness ability and rarely get sick with common colds, some claim to have been healed of cancer, diabetes and many other diseases from eating raw food.

       With all these obvious benefits raw food brings, why then would people become extra sensitive and have trouble handling everyday pollution and toxins that never seemed to bother them before?  Wouldn’t your body be stronger instead of weaker?  Wouldn’t your chemical threshold be increased upon eating raw foods and cleaning out old toxins?

       It goes against rationality that people on such a healthy diet could become even more sensitive in the long run.  Many raw food experts explain it away by saying that your body was so out of wack when your diet was unhealthy and now that you are eating healthy raw food your body has extra sensitive reactions to the environment in an attempt to protect you.

        I say that, no, this doesn’t seem right. Your body is an incredibly smart organism that doesn’t go out of wack and then become overly sensitive to everything in order to protect you.  I have a different theory.

Thinking unhealthy thoughts.

       As an observation and through my raw food experimentation I spent many hours researching the benefits of a raw food diet.  I read great testimonials on healing and recovery from those who ate raw, therefore, I expected the same results.  I expected detox symptoms in the beginning, a healthier body, a healthier mind, increased energy etc.

       I did, in fact, get these wonderful benefits as I ate more raw food.  I felt wonderful; however, I also noticed a new issue that came with the raw food territory: fear of being unhealthy by eating the “wrong” foods.  I noticed myself being obsessive about what I put into my body, about consistently reading ingredient lists, and about my inability to be guilt-free when I did eat in the “wrong” foods. These unhealthy thoughts began to make their home in my mind. I was healthy physically but my emotional well being was conditional and depended on if I ate the “the right” foods that day; if I stuck to the raw food diet.  Worrying over thoughts like that, is not healthy.

The cause to these unhealthy thoughts.

       I see what causes this problem. You may notice that in many articles on the internet and in many books on raw food there is also information on what you shouldn’t eat along with the info on the foods you should eat.  They tell you what is good versus what is bad for your body, and what happens to your body when you eat unhealthy food.

       Many raw food articles also talk about the toxicity of our environment and how dangerous everything we use, touch, breath, and surround ourselves with in everyday normal life.  They talk about everything from your clothes detergent to your toothpaste containing chemicals that are absorbed by your body.  They recommend you minimize your exposure to these toxins and chemicals.

       This is what causes the toxicity phenomenon that I mentioned earlier.  As you learn about what food “does to your body” and “how toxic our world is” you begin to think about it, analyze it, and sub-consciously incorporate it into your daily thoughts.  As the thoughts become more and more ingrained in your mind, you start to think of yourself as constantly being bombarded by toxins and chemical-ridden food.  You begin to think that you are sensitive to all these chemical hazards.  What do you think that does to you?  Your mind, which is responsible for your reality, then creates this “sensitivity” in your real life and you start to actually become sensitive to chemicals and get sick when you eat food that is not raw.

Raw food is wonderful.

       Don’t get me wrong, I sincerely believe that raw, organic fruits and vegetables are extremely good for you and totally natural for your body to digest.  It makes total sense that when something directly from nature is ingested in an unaltered state you will see great health benefits.  However, there is a danger of becoming overly worried about how sensitive your body really is to the so called bad foods and even everyday chemicals.  It’s smart to exercise caution concerning what you put into your body, but remember to stay balanced about it.

       If you think worrisome thoughts about eating the wrong foods (no matter what foods you believe are wrong) or about how dangerous our environment is, you will create sickness and disharmony in your mind and eventually in your body.  Similar to every other aspect of life, when you try to get away from your fears by overcompensating with another addiction, you may create a problem where there wasn’t one before.

The key is balance.

       You must have a healthy attitude before your diet can ever be completely beneficial to you.  You can balance your diet, but you must also balance your thoughts about that diet.
